Northern Lights Tour Operators vs Resellers in Iceland: Who Runs Your Tour?

A Northern Lights booking page tells you where to buy a ticket. It does not always tell you, at first glance, which company will provide the guide and run the evening. Before comparing prices or star ratings, find the name of the operator behind the specific tour.

Aurora Viking is an Icelandic tour operator running its own small-group Northern Lights tours from Reykjavík. Our tour is also sold through booking platforms. We have written this guide from that operator's perspective, using our own listings as a worked example. Platform details below were checked on 18 September 2026.

What is the difference between an operator and a reseller?

The operator is the company responsible for delivering the tour: organising its guides and transport, making operational decisions and providing the experience described in the booking. A reseller, travel agent or booking platform sells access to a tour supplied by another business. Some companies operate certain activities themselves and sell other operators' activities, so check the individual product rather than classifying every tour from the website's name.

Booking platforms can be useful for comparing options, payment methods and booking conditions. The practical question is who will run your particular departure, and which terms apply to your booking.

A real example: Aurora Viking across different booking websites

On our Viator Northern Lights tour listing, the supplier is identified as Aurora Viking. On our GetYourGuide Northern Lights listing, the activity provider is also Aurora Viking. You can also book through Aurora Viking's own tour page.

Those are different booking channels for an Aurora Viking experience, rather than three separate tour operators. Before treating two similarly named listings as the same tour, check the supplier, vehicle format, departure details and inclusions. A platform may sell several products from the same operator.

How to find the company running your tour

Look for a supplier, activity provider or operated-by field on the product page. Check the booking confirmation for the company name and local contact details. If the operator is unclear, ask the seller: “Which company will operate this specific Northern Lights departure?”

Then check the operator's own tour description. Confirm the pickup area, maximum number of guests, expected duration, included photography and what happens if conditions prevent the tour from running. If you need help boarding a vehicle or have another accessibility requirement, ask about the actual vehicle used for that departure.

Compare reviews for the experience you are buying

A tour-product rating, an operator's overall business rating and a booking platform's company rating describe different things. A company may receive reviews for Northern Lights tours, food walks, airport transfers and day trips. Its overall score does not automatically represent one Northern Lights product.

For example, on 18 September 2026 our Viator tour page displayed 4.9/5 from 518 reviews, while our GetYourGuide tour page displayed 4.8/5 from 451 reviews. These are dated observations of the linked tour listings; the figures may change.

Viator labels its total as including Viator and Tripadvisor reviews. Adding that count to Tripadvisor's count would therefore risk counting the same reviews twice. Google business-profile reviews should be labelled as business-wide rather than presented as reviews of a single tour product.

When you see a “highest-rated” claim, look for the comparison behind it: which operators and products were included, which platforms were checked, the date, the minimum review count and how equal scores were handled. A minimum such as more than 100 reviews can define an established-review comparison, but it should be stated openly and applied equally. A displayed 5.0 score can also be rounded; it does not prove that every review awarded five stars.

Compare the whole small-group offer

For a useful price comparison, select the same travel date, number and ages of passengers, and currency. Compare the final total alongside group size, pickup, photography, drinks, clothing or equipment, cancellation conditions and retry terms. Check whether a promotion is available for your date and whether anything important costs extra.

A lower headline price alone cannot establish which tour gives you the best value. A traveller prioritising included portraits may make a different choice from someone prioritising vehicle access or a private departure. Check retry and cancellation arrangements before booking

A cancelled departure and a tour that operates without a sighting are different situations. Read the terms for both. Ask whether a retry depends on available seats, how to request it and which company handles booking changes. A free retry is not the same as a refund.
