Choosing a Northern Lights tour in Iceland
The best Northern Lights tour depends on what you value: a smaller group, an adventurous 4x4, a budget-friendly coach, a view from the water or a private departure. Rather than averaging unrelated ratings, we compare the public reviews attached to specific aurora products. Aurora Viking wrote this guide and operates one of the tours discussed, so treat our own recommendation as a disclosed commercial opinion, not an independent award.
How this comparison works
Research refreshed 1 November 2026 (UTC). Our two primary product-review platforms are Tripadvisor and GetYourGuide. Each figure below belongs to the exact linked Northern Lights product, not the operator's entire catalogue. An eligible review-based category leader must have at least 101 reviews on the cited product listing. This is a selective comparison of verified Reykjavík-area options, not an exhaustive Iceland-wide audit.
The figures come from publicly displayed product pages and searchable indexed copies. Tripadvisor source pages used here were crawled between roughly August and 1 November; GetYourGuide pages were crawled on 31 October or 1 November unless stated. We identify older snapshots explicitly. Ratings may change after collection, and differences of 0.1 stars alone do not establish meaningful differences in service quality.
Important: Tripadvisor–Viator syndication is NOT verified for each specific tour here. The public Tripadvisor product pages do not consistently identify whether or how Viator-origin reviews contribute to their displayed totals. Viator's published operator guidance (22 April 2022) describes several review-collection routes with different visibility rules, but does not establish the present origin of each listing's displayed count. We use only Tripadvisor's own displayed figures for that platform; we neither add Viator counts nor claim a platform-wide merger. GetYourGuide remains an independent comparison series.
The quick comparison: which tour suits your plans?
Small-group minibus: Aurora Viking is our own pick for included professional photos, a maximum of 18 guests and an active search for clearer skies. It has the highest Tripadvisor displayed rating among the small-group products checked below on their available snapshots.
Shared Super Jeep: Superjeep.is offers a dedicated modified-vehicle experience; compare terrain access and group size against ordinary 4x4 minibuses. We do not declare an up-to-date overall Super Jeep category winner from the incomplete current sample.
Large coach: Northern Lights Bus is a substantial, highly reviewed coach option. The group is very different from a small minibus, so choose based on budget and experience rather than comparing ratings across categories.
Boat or yacht: Elding's Northern Lights cruise offers an alternative to driving. Sea Trips Reykjavík has a yacht product, but its previously linked GetYourGuide page no longer exposed a verifiable product rating during this check; we have not carried forward an old number.
Private tour: choose by vehicle, itinerary flexibility, photographer, total group price and the retry policy. We found no verified private product meeting our 101-review threshold for a category winner.
Aurora Viking: product ratings and business reputation
Tripadvisor — 5.0/5 from 362 reviews, for Reykjavik Northern Lights Tour with Pro Aurora Photos Small Group (product ID d25217481; indexed 1 November 2026).
GetYourGuide — 4.8/5 from 471 reviews, for Reykjavik: Northern Lights Tour w/Pro Photos – Small Group (product ID 437480; provider Aurora Viking; indexed 1 November 2026).
Google — 5.0/5 from 124 reviews, for the Aurora Viking business profile (checked 1 November 2026). This covers the business as a whole, not a single Northern Lights tour, and is excluded from all tour-product comparisons and review-velocity rankings.
Tripadvisor and GetYourGuide scores are not averaged; their review counts are not added. Nor are the Google business reviews treated as extra Northern Lights product feedback.
Small-group minibus Northern Lights tours
Tripadvisor (product-specific displayed snapshots, checked 1 November):
Aurora Viking — 5.0/5; 362 reviews. Direct product page indexed 1 November; up to 18 guests and professional photography included.
Nordur Travel — 4.9/5; 522 reviews. Its 4x4 minibus product page was last crawled around 28 October. A later 31 October category snapshot in our archive showed 525, so do not treat 522 as a live 1 November count.
EastWest — 4.8/5; 1,469 reviews. Small-group Northern Lights tour with hot chocolate and photos; product page crawled around 28 October. Our subsequent category snapshot showed 1,470.
Iceland Everywhere — 4.8/5; 407 reviews. Midnight Adventure small-group product, page crawled around 26 October.

Aurora Viking — 4.8/5; 471 reviews (1 November). Activity provider is Aurora Viking.
EastWest — 4.6/5; 735 reviews (31 October). Activity provider is EastWest.

These samples show how a single tour can have a different displayed rating and review count on different booking platforms. Aurora Viking has the highest displayed Tripadvisor rating among the four listed minibuses and the highest GetYourGuide rating among the three checked minibus listings. That is a finding about this selected sample, not a claim of being the highest rated across every tour in Iceland.
Shared Super Jeep and 4x4 choices
Superjeep.is — Tripadvisor 4.7/5 from 285 product reviews. A clearly designated Super Jeep tour; its indexed page was about two weeks old at our 1 November check.
Happyworld Iceland — Tripadvisor 4.8/5 from 275 product reviews in an older indexed result. The latest available source for this exact stargazing/4x4 product was around three months old, so we cannot responsibly certify it as the current category leader. The listing describes a 4x4 vehicle, but that does not independently prove it has the same vehicle class as a modified Super Jeep.
Nordur's 4x4 minibus and dedicated Super Jeep tours should not be bundled into one category without checking vehicle and passenger configuration. Both the 285-review Superjeep.is and 275-review Happyworld samples clear the 101-review threshold, but the dated evidence does not support a definitive current category ranking.
Coach-bus Northern Lights tours
Northern Lights Bus — Tripadvisor 4.4/5 from 917 reviews (product page crawled during the last week of October), and GetYourGuide 4.2/5 from 15,376 reviews (1 November; product ID 67019). The GetYourGuide page names Northern Lights Bus as the activity provider. These two counts remain separate.
Gray Line Iceland — Tripadvisor 3.4/5 from 584 Northern Lights coach-product reviews. The company-wide Tripadvisor operator review count shown nearby is a different metric and is not used here. The exact coach product's source was indexed in October.
Coaches can make sense for price and convenience. A 50–100-seat tour and an 18-seat minibus offer distinctly different guest experiences, so we keep their categories separate.
Northern Lights boats and yachts
Elding — Tripadvisor 4.5/5 from 446 Northern Lights Cruise from Downtown Reykjavik reviews. The product page was crawled on approximately 29 October. This is a boat-tour product count, not Elding's overall whale-watching and excursion reviews.
Sea Trips Reykjavík — Northern Lights yacht product: rating and current review count unavailable in this refresh. The previous GetYourGuide link returned a generic page rather than the verifiable product's rating/count on 1 November, so the September figure has not been reused.
An aurora cruise offers open water views and a warm cabin, but it cannot relocate inland between clear-sky gaps like a minibus. We do not designate a combined boat-and-yacht review winner from incomplete, non-equivalent product coverage.
Private Northern Lights tours
One checked Tripadvisor private Northern Lights product displayed 4.9/5 from 60 reviews (page crawled about 27 October). The current product supplier was not independently confirmed. With fewer than 101 product reviews, it is not eligible for a category-leader designation.
For a private booking, the group price, confirmed operator, vehicle type, guide, photo delivery and flexibility often matter more than a rating based on a small sample. There is no verified private-category leader in the set checked here.
Review Velocity: who is gaining new reviews?
The numbers below measure changes in publicly displayed product-review totals between available observations. They are NOT counts of individually verified review-publication dates or necessarily of tours taken during that window. The observation date is in UTC (Iceland, UTC+0); a page's crawl date may be older than the day we collected its search result. Different product ages, passenger volumes, booking platforms, review-request workflows and review syndication all affect comparisons.

For Aurora Viking, Tripadvisor's displayed product total increased from 307 on the operator's dated 1 October comparison to 355 in a 31 October archived snapshot: 48 more displayed reviews over 30 calendar days (+15.6%). The same dated 1 October baseline compared with Tripadvisor's 362 on 1 November gives +55 over 31 calendar days (+17.9%), equivalent to about 53.2 additional displayed reviews per 30 days. Those are overlapping windows, not two independent periods. The 1 October baseline was published by Aurora Viking and has no independently archived observation time, so confidence is medium.
GetYourGuide shows Aurora Viking at 455 product reviews in the dated 1 October article and 471 on its official product page on 1 November: +16 displayed reviews over 31 days (+3.5%), approximately 15.5 per 30 days. This is a separate platform's series; it must not be summed with Tripadvisor.
Nordur's archived Tripadvisor snapshots moved from 448 to 525 (+77, +17.2%), but the older snapshot's exact October date is unknown and the extent of any review syndication or count-definition change has not been resolved. That is NOT proof of 77 newly published October reviews or of a faster monthly review rate. Other competitor deltas similarly lack reliable full 30-day baselines. Accordingly we cannot currently conclude that Aurora Viking is gaining reviews faster or slower than its closest peers on a properly matched 30-day basis.
Preceding 30 days (approximately 1 September–1 October 2026): unavailable for a credible comparison, because matching dated product-count baselines are missing. Trailing 90 days (approximately 3 August–1 November 2026): unavailable for the same reason. Individual October-dated customer reviews can be seen on several linked product pages, but the publicly accessible sample or pagination was insufficient to count all of them exhaustively. A customer's tour date must not be mistaken for the review's publication date.
Google business reputation is outside this table. The published 1 October business-wide baseline was 122 reviews and the 1 November displayed count is 124: +2 business reviews. This says nothing directly about the number of reviews for Aurora Viking's Northern Lights product.

Our shared Northern Lights tour is limited to 18 guests, includes professional photographs when conditions permit, and uses live cloud, satellite and space-weather observations to adapt the search. Free retries under the Regular tour policy are available when the aurora was not visible to the naked eye, subject to the published rules and available seats. No Northern Lights operator can guarantee a sighting.
When comparing value, check the full per-person or group price, pickup, vehicle comfort, photo delivery, safety, the guide's weather decision process, and the precise retry/cancellation terms. A bigger review sample is evidence of more displayed customer feedback, not necessarily larger market share or a better individual tour.
Operators, resellers and honest disclosures
An operator drives and runs the excursion; a marketplace or reseller sells access to an excursion that may be supplied by someone else. Tripadvisor and GetYourGuide are comparison/booking channels, not extra independent tour companies. GetYourGuide's product pages above explicitly identify activity providers Aurora Viking, Nordur Travel, EastWest and Northern Lights Bus. If booking through a third-party travel website, verify the named actual supplier before judging its reviews.
Only the exact linked Northern Lights products with at least 101 reviews are considered for review-based category distinctions. We do not average platforms, pool overlapping sources, use a Google business-wide score as a product winner, or claim a representative census of all Icelandic tours. The reviewer may have experienced a different season, aurora display, guide or vehicle from those available on your travel date. Ratings describe posted opinions, not a scientifically measured sighting rate.
