Our custom-made aurora forecast model utilizes the Bz value to provide accurate predictions aurora activity. By analyzing this critical magnetic field component, we can effectively gauge the likelihood of auroras occurring, ensuring that enthusiasts and observers are well-informed. This innovative approach enhances our forecasting capabilities, It also allows travellers to manage their booking and find pick up places close to them. 

Cloud cover

We use the cloud cover forecast to decide where to go each evening, if its really cloudy we will be looking for gaps in the cloud cover, if its totally cloudy everywhere then we will not operate. We use a commercial forecast models not available to the public for free, but this one is pretty good as well. 

Once night falls the real cloud cover can often be quite different from the forecast so we will start using the satellite data more as it is real time and more reliable

Northern Lights Forecast for Iceland

There are two main parts to consider when looking at an Iceland Northern Lights forecast:

Aurora activity tells us what is happening in Earth's magnetic environment and whether conditions are favorable for auroral activity.

Cloud cover tells us whether we are actually likely to see the sky.

You can have strong auroral activity above Iceland and still see nothing if there is a thick layer of cloud. Likewise, relatively modest space-weather conditions can still produce visible Northern Lights when the sky is dark and clear.

This is why Aurora Viking does not make decisions based on a single number or forecast.

Cloud Cover Forecast in Iceland

Cloud cover is one of the most important factors when searching for the Northern Lights.

Icelandic weather is extremely changeable, and cloud forecasts can change substantially during the day. Different forecasting models can also disagree about exactly where clouds will form or clear.

For that reason, cloud-cover forecasts should be treated as guidance rather than a guarantee.

When deciding whether our Northern Lights tours will operate, Aurora Viking compares multiple weather models and forecasting sources rather than relying solely on one cloud forecast.

We also continue monitoring conditions as departure approaches because small changes in cloud cover can completely change the outlook for an evening.

What Does the KP Index Mean?

The KP index measures geomagnetic activity on a scale commonly used in aurora forecasting.

A higher KP value generally indicates stronger geomagnetic activity, but the KP index should not be treated as a simple Northern Lights visibility score.

Iceland is located at a high latitude where auroral activity can be visible under relatively modest geomagnetic conditions.

For someone trying to see the Northern Lights in Iceland, a clear sky in the right location can often matter more than chasing the highest KP number.

That is why our guides look at real-time space-weather information in addition to forecast KP values.

Solar Wind and Bz

Aurora activity is influenced by charged particles carried toward Earth by the solar wind.

One measurement aurora hunters frequently watch is the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field, particularly a value known as Bz.

When conditions become favorable, energy can enter Earth's magnetic environment more efficiently and increase auroral activity.

Because these measurements change constantly, real-time conditions can sometimes become more interesting than forecasts made several hours earlier.

This is one reason experienced Northern Lights hunting involves more than simply checking an aurora app before leaving Reykjavík.

Can a Northern Lights Forecast Guarantee Aurora?

No.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and no aurora forecast can guarantee what will appear at a specific place or time.

Forecasts help us identify probability and opportunity, not certainty.

Conditions can improve or deteriorate quickly. Clouds can open unexpectedly, auroral activity can strengthen, and local weather conditions may be very different only a short distance away.

That uncertainty is also part of what makes hunting the Northern Lights interesting.

How Aurora Viking Decides Whether to Operate

Aurora Viking makes the decision on whether to operate a Northern Lights tour based on the conditions expected that evening.

We consider several sources of information, including:

  • Cloud-cover forecasts

  • Multiple weather models

  • Satellite and weather information

  • Current and forecast solar-wind conditions

  • Geomagnetic activity

  • Road and driving conditions

  • Observations and local experience

We deliberately avoid making final decisions based on forecasts several days in advance because weather forecasting in Iceland becomes much more useful closer to departure.

Our objective is simple: if we believe there is a reasonable opportunity to find clear skies and Northern Lights, we go hunting.

Where Is the Best Place to See the Northern Lights Near Reykjavík?

There is no single location that is always best.

The best location depends on cloud cover, weather, auroral activity and road conditions on that particular night.

Sometimes conditions are best east of Reykjavík. On another evening, western or northern routes may offer clearer skies.

This is why our Northern Lights tours are operated as a hunt rather than a fixed sightseeing route.

Our guides choose the direction and viewing locations based on that night's conditions.

How accurate is the Northern Lights forecast in Iceland?

Aurora forecasts are useful for estimating conditions, but they cannot guarantee whether the Northern Lights will be visible. Cloud cover and rapidly changing weather are particularly important in Iceland.

Can you see the Northern Lights when the KP index is low?

Yes. A high KP index is not required for aurora to be visible from Iceland. Clear skies, darkness and current auroral activity all matter.

Is cloud cover more important than the KP index?

Both matter, but you cannot see the Northern Lights through thick cloud. Finding clear sky is therefore one of the most important parts of Northern Lights hunting in Iceland.

When does Aurora Viking decide whether the tour will operate?

We normally make the decision on the day of the tour when weather and cloud forecasts are considerably more useful than they are several days in advance.

Does Aurora Viking use only the Icelandic Met Office forecast?

No. We compare multiple weather models and forecasting sources along with current conditions when making operational decisions.
